Description
Introduction
1. In order to facilitate learning of the course subject, this course requires each student
to conduct a first-hand field research on an off-campus local business or non-profit
organization with 50 or more employees.
2. The research project is expected to turn out a comprehensive term paper on the
company’s management practices. The term paper should be 5,000 – 6,000 words
(excluding references, tables, and other attachments) and due on Sunday, July 3, 11:59
pm.
3. The term paper composes 23 points of the final grade (standard 100 points).
The Term Paper
1. The term paper needs you to apply major theories in the course to your target
organization’s situation. It is expected to compose six major parts, which themes, topics,
and lengths are described in the table in the end of this Instructions.
2. The paper should be solidly based on thorough understanding of text contents in the first
place. In addition, specific presentation of the target organization’s practices (such as
examples) on all those aspects should be emphasized over general discussion of those
topics.
3. In order to apply the theories in the text, the research also needs information from the
following three major sources:
First hand data. You are required to interview at least one manager at the top, middle,
and first-line levels respectively (total interviewees: 3). Detailed notes need to be taken
during interviews. Recording interview conversation with the interviewee’s permission
is preferable. The interviewee’s name, contact information, job title, and tenure at the
company as well as interview time and duration are also expected to be provided in the
final paper. You are also encouraged to use information from your systematic
observation of the organization’s business on site.
Business publications. Each paper is expected to use at least 10 references of business
publications related to its target organization from public sources. You may search ISU
library’s online catalog for books and online database1 (such as EBSCO, ProQuest, and
Lexis-Nexis) for articles. Articles from popular business publications such as Wall Street
Journal, Bloomberg Business Week, Fortune, Forbes, and The Economist as well as
local newspapers are preferred. The quality of the articles used as references will be
taken into account for the evaluation of the paper.
Organizational web site and documents. Using information on an organization’s web
site and corporate documents is optional. This type of information can be used only if
they are rephrased with your own language and appropriate hyperlink and/or references
1 Call the library reference desk (237-2580) for help on how to use those databases if needed.
BUS 371.302 Document Dossier, 10 of 13
are provided. Besides, the information should be cautiously used and treated in a way
similar to the company’s commercials.
4. For the term paper, logical structure, in-depth analysis, creative insights, and good
integration of course materials are highly emphasized for grading. Besides, the paper is
expected to use 12-point font, double spacing, and reference styles and other formats for
undergraduates recommended by APA. It should also be submitted as MS Word files
rather than MS Works files (i.e., “.wps” files are unacceptable and will not be graded).
See the Grading Criteria for Writing Assignments in this Dossier.
5. The term paper is expected to be your original product of field research. You are
encouraged to use first hand data, i.e., information collected through personal interview,
observation, survey, etc. Existing information from online/web site, corporate
documents, and/or publications may be used only if the original contents have been
appropriately rephrased with your own language and appropriate references and credits
are provided. Otherwise the paper would be treated according to the University
Standards (3.01).
