Description
In applying to UK Universities, one of the most critical aspects of the application is a
Statement of Purpose (SOP) which reflects your personality and academic
achievements in front of the admission committee.
An SOP is an essay stating your purpose for applying to study your desired course at
a particular university. As this is the only subjective aspect of your application
allowing you to prove that you have something unique, it is of utmost importance
that you follow the guidelines and format while writing the SOP to impress the
admission committee.
Before starting to draft the essay, keep in mind the following points:
? Use 12 issue Times New Roman font
? SOP for the UCAS application must not exceed 4000 characters or 500
words
? SOP for the Master’s program requires a word limit of 1000 words or up to
one & half-page
? Use strong, clear, and concise writing with a positive tone
? The statement must be plagiarism free (must be original)
? The statement shouldn’t have any grammatical errors or spelling mistakes.
The general format to write an effective Statement of Purpose (SOP):
? What do you want to study in higher education, and how did you get the
inspiration to choose this field
? Why do you want to study only for this degree, and how does studying this
program befits your career aspiration. Demonstrate your passion.
? Your previous academic qualification(s). What modules/subjects you
learn that increased your interest in pursuing your desired field
? Work experience or internships/projects you sought that have provided
you with knowledge and skills related to the field
? Any extracurricular activity, volunteer work or hobbies that have provided
you with skills connecting to the area and how that can be applied in your
future career
? What job or career do you hope to have in the future, and why do you
think this is an important aim?
? What knowledge, skills or experience do you need to do this job well?
? Write concisely about the expertise and additional skills are you planning
to gain from the degree.
? Any module(s) you are particularly interested to study
? Why do you want to look in the UK?
? Why do you want to look at this particular university/college/school?
(Only applies to university-specific SOP)
? What are your expectations from the university? Facilities, infrastructure,
etc.
? What will you do immediately after you complete the course?
? How do you think pursuing this course will help you in your career?
Mention your short-term and long-term career goals
? Why do you think you will fit in the program and university? What specific
skills do you bring to the table?
? Conclude with a positive note of securing a place on the course and your
readiness to join the course
Try to make yourself stand out from the crowd. Highlight your unique selling
point.
