SUNY Binghamton University Indentured Servitude Antonio Johnson History Questions

Description

Part I. Identifications (15 points each; 60 points total)

Select one term from Column A and one term from Column B and pair them together to create four (4) mini-essays (1-2 paragraphs each). Each pair will create one mini-essay. In each mini-essay, you should identify each of the two terms from the context of course readings, primary documents, and/or study guides (not from something you look up on the internet!) and explain how the two are connected in American history. Cite your sources. There are possibly multiple matches for each term, so there is no “right” way to match them up, but you should logically explain how they are related in order to receive a superior grade. Do ONLY four of these, not more. DO NOT USE ANY TERM MORE THAN ONCE!

COLUMN A COLUMN B

Thomas Paine Bacon’s Rebellion

Atlantic world Anthony/Antonio Johnson

“Middle ground” Great Awakening

Indentured Servitude Declaration of Independence

Seven Years War “Shining city upon a hill”

“Slave society” Fur trade

Salem Witch Trials Pontiac

Shays’ Rebellion Pennsylvania Constitution of 1776

PART II. ESSAY (40 points): Please answer ONE (1) of the following two essays. You can probably compose an “A” answer in about five paragraphs, but your essay may be a little longer or shorter than that. Do not answer two questions.

  1. W.E.B DuBois famously argued in 1903 that “the problem of the twentieth century is the color line.” Do you think that this statement equally applies to the period we have discussed thus far in this course (from the beginning of the meeting of Africa/Europe/America through the American Revolution)? In other words, is there a compelling argument to be made that another phenomenon other than that of the division between Europeans and non-Europeans was more important during this time period? Why or why not? Be sure to support your answer with specific evidence from course materials.
  2. Given the many different aspects of American society we have discussed during the American Revolution, do you think it is accurate to describe this era as a “radical” revolution? Why or why not? Be sure to support your answer with specific evidence from course materials.
