Social change involves how we go about creating change within our communities for the good of those within the community by creating cultural shifts. This involves being a change maker. Ashoka (2017) explains that a change maker is a person who decides to take the initiative to realize and solve problems that will benefit those persons in that setting. Ashoka (2017) explained who change makers are and what they to do create social change. It is quite simple, a change maker must be willing to identify the problem, develop solutions, build a team to try solutions with, learn as you are working to change, and inspire others to not only focus on the problem but importantly the solutions (Ashoka, 2017). It is important to note that change makers must go at their own pace and have the confidence to tackle complex issues as they will occur (Ashoka, 2017).
Walden University has a wealth of social change resources and stories that allow others to really understand the school’s mission and passion for social change. They do not just speak it, they are about digging into the work of social change. It is clear from Walden’s vision that they strive to produce graduates that have the knowledge to apply what they have learned to critical changes in our continuous diverse society (Walden University, 2015). Walden advocates for and supports study abroad programs, social entrepreneurship programs, and celebrates change makers within the institution (Walden University, 2015). It is clear that Walden instills the value of social change and supports social change through every avenue within Walden. Ashoka (2017) has his readers reflect on the role that they will play daily and every class at Walden challenges us to have this same mindset as well.
